First things first, what’s the brand that you’re considering the packaging for? Each product belongs to a certain category or segment which defines the colours, texture, appeal and attraction.
It is of utmost importance that you understand the demographic of the product and grasp the core areas of interest of the particular TG. This doesn’t just call for the recall of your experiences but also a great amount of research.
If the product is for men, the colours, texture & tonality will be masculine. It will not be the same as any product for the female gender.
Similarly, certain age groups of people will be attracted towards certain designs.
The client is not just the one who has reached out to you for the packaging design, but the one whose brainchild the product is! That person will have a lot to say about the product and share important insights about how they came up with it. Being very clear with the client and having a clear communication will lead to hitting the target when it comes to designing the product packaging.
To make the packaging engaging, you can have a storyline in the packaging. It is not necessary that the storytelling will have to be in words, but it can be depicted through designs, patterns, symbols, colours and pictures too.

Sometimes, in the clutter of the design elements, the most important things i.e. the product name and the logo is lost. This is an example of disastrous packaging. Keep a check on whether the design of the packaging is hiding the logo and the name in the bleed outs or the folds.
Some of your clients may not have the budget to go for an expensive texture of the packaging. Take it in a sporting manner instead of complaining. Overcome this challenge by figuring out the colours and the design elements in such a way that it doesn’t look cheap even if a low quality texture or material is used for the product packaging.
